As part of our partnership with FM provider JLL, our Grounds Maintenance team, working on the JLL contract, was invited to deliver a community project at George Carey Primary School in Barking, on behalf of Portico Facilities Management.

During the summer holidays, volunteers from Ground Control, Portico, and Walker Tree Care joined forces to transform an underused outdoor area into a safe and welcoming garden designed to encourage children to explore nature and the outdoors when they return for the new school term.

Newly landscaped garden

The team carried out a wide range of works, including:

  • Clearing poor-quality ground and installing timber-edged raised beds.
  • Replacing overgrown shrubbery with child-friendly plants such as Senecio (rabbit ears), Photinia (Red Robin), Lavender, Hebe, Japonica, and Hostas—encouraging children to engage with textures, scents, and colours.
  • Laying bark mulch across pathways.
  • Reshaping existing shrubs to best horticultural practice.
  • Pruning low branches and removing invasive weeds to ensure safety.

All areas were securely fenced during the works, with waste responsibly removed from the site.

Eight volunteers gave their time and expertise to make the project possible:

  • Ground Control: Lisa Bussey and Roy Candlin (managers of the JLL and FM contracts), Tom Carr and Kenny Hanney (graduates of Ground Control’s SEN programme, now working as operatives).
  • Portico: Salamanta Idrissa and Lachezare Gerov.
  • Walker Tree Care: Ben Sutton and Matthew Anderson.

Chris Harrison, Headteacher at George Carey Primary School, said:

I cannot thank you enough for the transformation that you have all made to our school garden. The work completed has transformed the area from a hazardous environment to one of beauty and safety for children. The use and joy that the pupils will get from using this area as a result of your hard work will be immense.

Beata Horvath, Social Impact Manager at Portico, commented:

I wanted to extend my sincere thanks to each of you. Thank you so much to Stephen at JLL for introducing me to Lisa and Roy from Ground Control. Your support made this connection possible, and I truly appreciate it.
Lisa and Roy, I can’t thank you enough for your incredible efforts in bringing the garden at George Carey Primary School back to life. Your hard work has made the space vibrant and usable again, and I’m certain the children and teachers will deeply appreciate the transformation.
Once the school term begins, I’ll be asking a few of the children for their feedback. I’m sure it will be full of joy and gratitude.
I also wanted to say how smooth and easy it was to organise everything with you. I know how much coordination and planning goes into a project like this, and I’m genuinely grateful for how seamlessly it all came together.
Thank you once again for your dedication and generosity. If there is anything I can assist you with in the future, please feel free to contact me. I hope we’ll have the opportunity to collaborate again.

Roy Candlin, Account Director FM/MA and SEN Programme Manager at Ground Control, added:

It’s always a pleasure to collaborate with our FM partners and teams on the ground to give back to the community. I’m delighted the school is so pleased with the outcome and proud that our skills and dedication have created such a positive social impact.
