Ground Control was established in 1973 as a Grounds Maintenance company, becoming incorporated as a limited company in 1984. Ground Control’s first commercial contract was to provide grounds maintenance to three Tesco stores. Over a period of 25 years of outstanding service delivery at best value prices, this contract grew to some 600 Tesco stores and a National Partnering Contract for landscape design and build. The company won its first national contract for 1,600 Royal Mail sites in 2003, which created the platform for significant growth.
Through a buy-in, management buy-out in 2004, four Directors re-mortgaged their homes to invest with Simon and Kim Morrish to purchase the company from the founder. During the same year, all employees were issued with employee stock options,creating a much more democratic and participatory ownership structure. The new management team took a conscious decision to diversify into different sectors and services, as well as widening the client base to provide predictable income streams and long term employment opportunities. In 2005, we acquired Moray Landscapes in Scotland to provide in house expertise in winter maintenance, along with a strong management team in Scotland, building on their exceptionally good name in the industry. In 2010, we acquired Vale Contract Services as a strategic acquisition into the public sector domain, serving councils, housing associations, education and emergency services. The former owners and the entire management team, with over 30 years of experience in grounds maintenance, have been fully retained ensuring outstanding experience and skills, along with market understanding and local authority expertise.
Our client base now includes national or large regional contracts for Tesco, Sainsbury’s, The Co-op, Halfords, Toys R Us, B&Q, Waitrose and Fitness First in the retail sector, along with Thames Water, Severn Trent Water and Anglian Water in the utilities sector, and Lincoln Council, Basildon NHS, Defence and various schools in the public sector.
Outstanding service delivery has been the linchpin of our business, producing over 99.2% annual client site retention and some 20% growth per year.
