Forecast-Informed Winter Readiness for Commercial Properties
Certified by the Institute of Highways, Peter Brown, Ground Control's Winter Commercial Operations and Technical Sales Manager, has completed the UK's only accredited programme for Winter Services Decision Makers and Managers. Drawing on industry-leading expertise, Peter explains why businesses should prepare now to protect their people, properties and operations throughout the winter months.
While autumn 2026 has begun with milder-than-average temperatures, businesses should not assume the risk of winter disruption has passed. A mild autumn can create a false sense of security. While warmer temperatures may delay the arrival of frost and snow, they don't remove the risk of winter weather arriving later in the season.
According to the Met Office, one of the strongest El Niño events on record is contributing to warmer, wetter conditions across the UK. However, mild weather now can increase the likelihood of sudden cold snaps later in the season, making early planning for commercial winter gritting and snow clearance essential.
Why a Mild Autumn Doesn't Remove Winter Risk
Autumn 2026 is off to a mild start: damp and breezy, but warmer than we’d usually expect, and shaped by one of the strongest El Niño events ever recorded. The current combination of warm temperatures, increased rainfall and forecasted storm activity creates a range of operational challenges for commercial sites, including:
- Slippery walkways caused by wet leaves and organic debris
- Flooding and drainage issues resulting from blocked gullies and gutters
- Storm-related disruption and damage to trees and infrastructure
- Increased risk of ice formation during sudden overnight temperature drops
For facilities managers, property managers and business owners, these hazards can create health and safety risks, operational disruption and potential liability concerns. That’s where our Maintenance team can support, as explored by Marc in his blog “Take it or leave it: Understanding leaf litter”
As winds pick up, autumn storms are the first to reveal unsafe trees. The increased wind speeds can cause unstable, dead, or diseased branches to suddenly fall. This danger can be mitigated with proactive tree surveys and safety inspections that will identify issues, provide details of potential dangers, and recommend how to keep your staff, customers, and grounds safe.
Kevin Selezack, Head of Arboriculture and Ecology, explored how the end of nesting season opens up the opportunity for tree works and surveys:
Commercial Winter Gritting: Forecast-informed Operational Readiness
My advice? Be prepared before temperatures fall, as a mild start doesn’t rule out winter. El Niño can raise the risk of cold snaps later in the season, and they can arrive quickly after a mild spell. That’s why Ground Control’s readiness for gritting, snow clearance, and emergency services still matters.
Although temperatures remain above seasonal averages, winter weather can arrive quickly. Ground Control's commercial winter gritting services use advanced weather forecasting and trigger frameworks to ensure sites receive treatment when conditions require it.
Our winter maintenance services help keep:
- Car parks safe and accessible
- Pedestrian walkways free from ice hazards
- Distribution centres operational
- Healthcare facilities accessible
- Schools, universities and public sector sites protected
- Retail parks and commercial estates operational and open for business
By combining proactive weather monitoring with nationwide operational coverage, Ground Control helps organisations reduce weather-related risk and maintain business continuity throughout winter.
While the current outlook points to a wetter and milder autumn than usual, the possibility of frost, ice and snowfall later in the season remains. That's why we're maintaining full operational readiness across our winter gritting, snow clearance and emergency response services.
After all, winter doesn't arrive when the calendar says so. It arrives when conditions change.
