Renewable Energy

Ground Control is dedicated to reducing both electricity consumption and our carbon footprint wherever possible, and this is achieved by adopting the following environmentally-friendly practices.

  • Switching off lights and equipment when not in use
  • Replacing appliances with more energy efficient models
  • Monitoring the insulation of our buildings
  • Using a renewable energy provider

Our head office is powered by OPUS Energy, who provide their energy from sustainable sources, such as wind and solar. We purchase 11GWhs per year of renewable energy offset – this ensures our entire operation is more than carbon neutral.

Though Ground Control Foundation, we have invested in Ignite Power to install solar panels in rural homes in Rwanda and Sierra Leone for less than $4 a month – this is much cheaper than their current lighting system of kerosene lamps and will also improve respiratory health.
We also currently have a solar panel array fitted to our Billericay office, and any surplus power is fed back into the grid. Also, our chief executive, Simon Morrish, has launched another company called Solar Ventus which works to install wind turbines across the UK.

Reduced Energy Consumption

Ground Control is dedicated to reducing our energy consumption, and this is displayed by FORS Bronze accreditation. This means we focus on attaining low emission vehicles to meet our personal targets on fuel consumption, which is monitored using our Fleetmatic vehicle trackers. This data then allows drivers to adjust their driving behaviour in order to conserve fuel and overall drive in a more environmentally-friendly fashion.

If not assigned a company car, all our employees are offered a significant subsidy to convert them from combustible engine cars to electric vehicles. To further promote EVs as a company, we now offer EV chargepoint installation to clients. In addition, we actively encourage staff to be aware of their driving practices, by training them in journey planning, vehicle maintenance, and checking tyre pressures.

Reducing Carbon Footprint

Cutting carbon emissions is a main focus of Ground Control, and we endeavour to reduce our CO2 emissions in a few different ways. In addition to the procurement of low emission vehicles, we also use zero emission handheld tools when carrying out maintenance work across the UK.

Scott Downton, Head Gardener, stated: “It is more important than ever for us to work in ways that are increasingly beneficial to the environment. The reduction in noise pollution, in addition to the fact that no greenhouse gases are produced, is a bonus.”
