One Donation, Twice The Impact! The Big Give Appeal For British Rainforests, 22-29 April
Ground Control’s Evergreen environmental impact fund is thrilled to be able to support The Big Give Appeal For British Rainforest, 22 – 29 April by donating £5,000.
But we need your help as well.
We have rainforest! But it is threatened. Our temperate rainforests are found in western Britain from Cornwall to Sutherland. It is globally important and home to a rich diversity of wildlife especially the lichens, mosses and ferns which make this habitat so unique and truly special.
Imagine a rainforest – festooned, vibrant and full of life – right here in the UK
Woodlands are one of our most beloved habitats. Britain has an outstanding diversity of woodland for our small land area. Some of these woodlands – our temperate rainforests – are of global importance. Found in only a few regions of the world, including Chile, Tasmania, Iran and Japan, Britain’s surviving fragments hug the Atlantic coastline from Scotland, through Wales and down to Cornwall.
Britain’s rainforest is especially wonderful. They thrive in the mild, damp climate gifted to us by the Gulf Stream. These are woodlands with a sense of mystery; where the air can be thick with mist, enigmatic fungi work their magic, and the exquisite colours and textures of mosses, ferns and lichens cloak the trees.
We know that tropical rainforests are under threat. Our British rainforests are no longer used to graze livestock, make charcoal or extract timber. Invasive Rhododendron can quickly take hold, creating dense, dark conditions where flora can’t survive. Many of our characteristic woodland birds and butterflies continue to decline, once common plants in our ancient rainforests no longer flourish and tree diseases such as ash dieback now threaten to alter our woodlands.
If we don’t look after our rainforests, we’ll witness the slow loss of the magical diversity that makes them so special. Will you help?
Plantlife has been instrumental in the conservation of temperate rainforests for the last decade, working in Wales, south-west England and Scotland. Importantly Plantlife is working with people – advising woodland owners and managers, running ID courses, producing management guides and training a new generation of lichen and moss experts.
Your support will ensure our rainforests and their wildlife are healthier and more resilient to climate change in the coming years.
Would you like your donation doubled? For one week only between 22 and 29 April, every pound you give via the Big Give website, up to £30,000, will be matched by the Big Give Green Match Fund, The Highlands and Islands Environment Foundation and Ground Control’s Evergreen Fund, meaning you will have double the impact.
