Helping To Rewild The UK
On March 20, people across the world will celebrate the first-ever World Rewilding Day and raise awareness of rewilding and our need for it.
Ground Control, which became certified Carbon-Neutral in March 2021 are passionate about restoring nature and are actively rewilding large parts of Britain.
In 2018 Highways England approached our Landscape Construction team working within Cumbria and their Construction Works Framework to provide consultation to them and Cumbria Wildlife Trust (CWT) in a funding application to HLF for the Get Cumbria Buzzing Campaign. The Project created a total of 115 hectares of wildflower-rich habitat over 62 sites in Cumbria – a haven for bees, butterflies and other pollinators in North West Cumbria.
Our collaborative work with Cumbria Wildlife Trust, Amey Consulting, HW Martin and Highways England on the Get Cumbria Buzzing campaign won the Highways England 2019-2020 Delivery Award for Excellence in Environment & Sustainability and been recognised for strong regional planning, delivery of greater benefits from corridor-based thinking and the use of matched funding and wider community engagement. Our contribution to these works involved introducing new, innovative ways of cutting and collecting grass and spreading seed. We looked to Europe to find equipment to aid this innovation and succeed in establishing wildflower corridors where other contractors had failed. The new methods made working on the highway safer, quicker and less costly, which enabled Cumbria Wildlife Trust to add additional sites to the campaign and extend the B-line corridors further. During the project we also worked with local volunteers, contributing to the project being a resounding success in engaging Highways England’s customers and raising awareness of the importance of Highways England’s works alongside the socially and environmentally considerate way in which they are delivered.
