Fast response from Ground Control as Winter Hill blaze leads to emergency call out

Ground Control supported Arqiva by emergency clearing vegetation to protect masts from blazing fire.

This week Ground Control was quick to action, offering emergency support to valued customer, Arqiva, clearing vegetation to protect their estate and mast area from the Winter Hill Blaze that cleared the moorlands from Manchester to Lancashire.

On June 29th at 8pm, Ground Control team leader Daniel Howe, along with Contract Manager, Ian Cooper attended the Arqiva site at Winter Hill to clear vegetation surrounding the masts after the fire service recommended that vegetation was cut down to prevent the fire from spreading. This helped to protect the second most important TV transmitter in the country, covering 7 million people, from the wild fire that was viciously spreading across the moorlands. Ground Control also supported the following day at 5am, with team member Nick Palmer attending to provide further assistance clearing vegetation and maintaining the land so that no assets were destroyed.

The fire, which is believed to have been an arson attack, has lasted a week and is still currently burning underground. The fire was first seen on Thursday 28th June at 3pm when a 1km square area of grass was found burning, now 16km square area of moors have been burnt destroying all of the habitats and vegetation surrounding the site.

Ian Cooper, Ground Control’s Contract Manager, commented: “Our teams really came together to support our customer in their time of need. Thanks go to everyone involved for responding so quickly on this, a real team effort!”

David Blackwell from Arqiva was impressed with the work completed and praised the company for the fast response to the task, he commented:
“The work by your team, as part of a great collaboration rallied together on Friday evening, played a huge part in protecting the security of a very significant Arqiva and national TV and Radio broadcasting asset. I really appreciate your support to help Arqiva out when required – this means a lot.”
