Triple Green Flag success for Ground Control
National Maritime Museum becomes the first museum in the country to be awarded a Green Flag, with Croydon Cemetery retaining Green Flag status for a seventh year and Southampton Solent University for a second!
Ground Control, one of the UK’s leading external maintenance and commercial landscaping companies, is proud to reveal that the National Maritime Museum, Croydon Cemetery in Croydon and Southampton Solent University have been awarded Green Flags, marking them as some of the best green spaces in the country.
The Green Flag Award scheme recognises and rewards well managed parks and green spaces, setting the benchmark for the management of recreational outdoor spaces across the UK and around the world.
Ground Control has been maintaining the National Maritime Museum since 2004, with a dedicated team on site, led by Head Gardener Scott Downton, to ensure the grounds are always at their best. This year’s Green Flag Award is a first for the museum, who submitted an entry following many great awards celebrated at the site, including British Association of Landscape Industries (BALI) National Landscape Awards, and numerous London in Bloom Awards.
Ground Control’s contract with Royal Museums Greenwich covers all elements of grounds maintenance across the 12 acre World Heritage site, surrounding the National Maritime Museum, the Queen’s House and Royal Observatory.
Croydon Cemetery is celebrating its 7th consecutive Green Flag this month. Ground Control has been maintaining the cemetery since November 2012 under a contract that includes maintenance of the 51 acre site and involves caring for the 7,000 memorial roses and creating bedding displays as well as keeping the grass, hedges and borders tidy.
The site is maintained by a dedicated team of 7, led by Dave Osborne, which allow us to work in partnership with the client. Our long standing and experienced operatives also offer help with bereavement services, providing assistance with burials and any other matters the client might need to ensure the smooth running of the cemeteries.
Celebrating its second Green Flag Award this year, Southampton Solent University puts it down to a ‘one team’ approach between university teams and Ground Control. Ground Control has been maintaining the grounds at Warsash campus since August 2015, receiving recognition with a Green Flag on the anniversary after the contract began.
Contract Manager, Peter Mountford comments;
“These awards are great testimony to the partnership we hold with these valued customers. A Green Flag Award requires both input from the client and contractor to ensure a long term effective management plan is in place to protect our green spaces. We are very proud to have supported the National Maritime Museum to achieve their first Green Flag following a strong and successful 14 year partnership; the first museum in Britain to achieve this status!
We’re delighted that Croydon Cemetery has scooped yet another Green Flag, for the fourth year in Ground Control tenure. It is a real credit to the team’s hard work and dedication on site. Well done to all involved.”
Operations Manager, Jim Edwards, added; “We are absolutely delighted with the success of our contract with Solent University to date. To achieve another Green Flag Award is a fantastic achievement and a real testament to our ongoing relationship built by our contracts manager Adam Lee and the truly dedicated team members on site.”
International Green Flag Award Scheme Manager Paul Todd said: “We are delighted to be celebrating another record-breaking year for the Green Flag Award scheme.
“Each flag is a celebration of the thousands of staff and volunteers who work tirelessly to maintain the high standards demanded by the Green Flag Award. The success of the scheme, especially in these challenging times, demonstrates just how much parks matter to people.”
