Your initial application is screened and you will receive instant feedback regarding your potential suitability. You can then decide whether you wish to complete the rest of the application process.
Our interview process consists of two stages:
Assessment – You will be asked to complete a short assessment relating to the role you have applied for. For example we might ask you to identify different type of plants or trees, or ask you to undertake a task using Excel – it all depends on the role!
Face-to-Face Interview – We want to know all about you! We will be looking for you to tell us all about your previous experience, what you want from a role with us and understand what really drives you to succeed.
We ask you to spend a full day with us working in the role you have applied for. You get the opportunity to experience first-hand what it’s like working with us, and we get to see you in action! In this way both of us can be sure that Ground Control is the right fit.
University of Ground Control
The development of our staff is one of our biggest passions; we love nothing more than to assist people in their personal development and watch them grow. In 2012, we introduced The University of Ground Control, offering over 60 courses ranging from basic Excel skills to 12-day residential leadership courses and including a wide range of practical and health and safety courses. As our company continues to grow we see a number of development opportunities arise and take great pleasure in having fantastic people who have experienced very real career progression with us.
Technology and Ground Control: I joined Ground Control in 2010, attracted by how eager the organisation is to embrace new ideas and to implement the latest technological advancements into the maintenance industry. I have been able to work alongside my exceptionally talented colleagues in the ICT department to redevelop the Winter Maintenance operating system and had significant input to the formation of the Android mobile solution to 600+ field team workers.
Ground Control is unique in its willingness to adapt which is demonstrated by constantly looking for technological solutions to solve daily problems and increase customer satisfaction.
Expressing ambitions: I joined Ground Control in 2004 as a Contracts Manager and today I lead the grounds maintenance division as Grounds Maintenance Director, overseeing a set of 5 Regional Operations Managers, with 40 Contracts Managers and over 45,000 sites. When joining Ground Control I had already held a number of management positions within the grounds maintenance sector working with clients such as Thames Water Utilities.
Upon joining Ground Control I had a clear goal to progress beyond my entry position, something the company encouraged me to do and helped me achieve through my promotion into the role of Contracts Director and onto National Operations Director, and Grounds Maintenance Director.
Living your potential - University of Ground Control: After joining in 2004 as an Operations Assistant, I was able to not only fulfil the duties of my role but also expand on my tasks to demonstrate my potential. This was evident when I implemented the live reporting system and bettered communications between site staff and head office.
My appetite for progression was recognised when I was promoted into the role of Performance Director in 2011 and onto National Operations Support Director and my current role as Business Analyst. Ground Control is continually backing me to further my skill set, highlighted by a General Management qualification via the University of Ground Control.
Groundsman to Director: After a long and enjoyable period of time working as a Groundsman at the Tower of London, I was promoted through a number of roles. This included Head Gardener at the National Maritime Museum, Contracts Manager for the South and Essex and then for London/Home Counties before becoming a Senior Contracts Manager and moving to Essex to manage the Anglian Water Contract, and onto the role of Contracts Director. Moving my sights to winter maintenance, I progressed to become Winter Maintenance Director, before being promoted this year as Maintenance Director, heading up both our grounds and winter maintenance services to our customers across the country.
My rise through the ranks into the role of Maintenance Director reflects that a position at Ground Control is less of a job and more of a career.
Business and Personal Growth: I joined the Construction team 8 years ago as Construction Coordinator which consisted of 5 members making up the construction department and providing support to a single Construction Manager. Since my first day at Ground Control through to my current position, the company has consistently pointed to the fact that the rewards are there for those that work hard which has reflected in my advancement.
My career has grown alongside the development of the company; I am now responsible for the procurement and back office administration for the construction department.
